Basic Training: Level One

Day One: (includes 4 hours Introduction to MSE + an additional 4 hours = 8 hours.)

Introduction to MSE: (4 hours) Topics include: the Sensory World, MSE History & the MSE Approach Overview for all populations. The common thread of the MSE approach. Types of MSE Spaces.

  • This would be for all individuals both professionals, paraprofessionals and parents.
  • This would be the beginning of level one, day one training for all professionals.

          PLUS

  • Introduction to: Sensory Diets, Sensory Processing and Learning Styles through specific exercises designed to understand the above topics.
Objectives:
  1. To understand the primary senses and how they interact with our environments for keeping us safe, happy and focused.
  2. To explore the senses through participation in the Multi-Sensory Environment (if a room is available)

Training would include how our senses work, the conscious and unconscious sensory process, our attitudes toward our sensory experiences, relaxation process and the benefits of the MSE approach. Learning styles and how they relate to our sensory diets. This would be geared toward guided experiences, exercises and exploration of the senses.

UPON COMPLETION OF DAY 1: A Certificate of Attendance is awarded (8 hours)

    Day Two:
(8 hours) Training includes:

  • Continuation of Sensory Diets, Sensory Processing and Learning which would include theory and simple science.  Evaluations, assessments tools for use with an MSE.
  • How to utilize sensory modalities to illicit change for different learning or treatment experiences.  How to analysis and utilize sensory equipment in conjunction with the design and purpose of an MSE.  Develop of equipment protocols, how practicioners individualize it to their specific needs; teaching and treatment techniques.  General Development of Goals / outcomes for the individuals they are serving.  General lesson and Treatment Planning for individuals and groups.  Demonstration of changing general / brain arousal levels.

    Objectives:
  1. To understand the simple science, making permanent changes, relaxation and learning.
  2. To define interfering stress, its detrimental effects on the human being, in relation to age, stage and quality of life as it impacts our ability to focus, attend and learn. Relaxation would be: reversing and preventing the detrimental effects of stress with the MSE such as which techniques to utilize and how to foster permanent change through guided sensory experiences.
  3. To be able to define brain arousal and understand the use of changing arousal to facilitate attention and focus.
  4. To understand and demonstrate how sensory processing contributes to Learning.
  5. To understand and be able to demonstrate setting up MSE Equipment protocols and basic Sensory Diets. Sensory Diets: matching the individualÕs specific sensory needs and how to work with the individual around their specific learning styles and making the most efficient use of the MSE equipment and room; the use of assessment tools to plan the individualized process. Equipment protocols: What equipment gets used for whom; and how do I do it, includes equipment evaluations, developing specific sequencing/order of use of equipment, in order to promote good integration of the senses.
  6. To develop, understand and write specific individualized outcome measurement strategies.

Basic Training: Level Two (8 hours) Completion of a Project from the Choices Below:

  1. A case study of how you applied MSE to an individual, what was the goal, how did you accomplish the goal, what did you utilize in the MSE, what progress if any was there, how did they measure the progress, was it temporary or long term permanent progress, how was it helpful to the individual, what changes would they make to improve the process, etc. This needs to be written up or videotaped along with a case report of findings and sent to Linda Messbauer for review and approval within 3 months of taking the Basic Training Course.
  2. Development of 3 individual lesson plans for utilizing MSE with three clients/students on different learning, educational, behavioral objectives.
  3. If you do not have a room you should volunteer your service to an existing MSE room for one full day a total of 8 hours. After your observation, you will be provided with a case study and then proceed with the case study project in choice # 1 or the development of lesson plans in choice #2. A written report of your experience along with your case study or lesson plans will be sent to Linda Messbauer and the Training Committee for review and approval.
  4. If you do not have a room please design an MSE space for a specific population, submitting the preparatory work, with rationale for selection of equipment, how design follows function, development of their specific sequence for equipment, a protocol for your specific population and or lesson plans.

Following the completion an approval of your project:
A Certificate of Completion of Basic Training (CCBT) will be awarded.
You are now certified as an MSE Practitioner endorsed by AAMSE.

ADVANCED TRAINING

Completion of Basic Training is required before you are eligible to enroll in Advanced Training: You also need to have been working in your room for at least 1 year before registering for Advanced Training.

Level 3: Advanced Training (2 days): The Master Trainer will travel to your room and do specific training with your client/ patient/ student population.  Advanced training will include specific techniques, theory and demonstrations within their area of expertise. Some actual work with your consumers/ students/clients. You will have to demonstrate specific techniques to the Master Trainer. A part of this process as well as would be how to measure progress and evaluate their program.

Succesful completion of Advanced Training requires completion of a project selected from a list of projects provided by AAMSE (see above).  The project should be completed at your facility and when completed sent to the training room to review.  Upon completion and approval of the project a CERTIFICATE will be awarded.  The trainee may take up to six months to complete the project.

Objectives:

  1. To understand the rationale for MSE and the specific theory behind MSE for a specific diagnostic group.
  2. To establish the credibility for use of MSE and how to use it with their specific population. It would include the science trends supporting MSE / Snoezelen and where to find Research/Science to support its' specific use with their population. It will offer suggestions for adding to the body of supporting evidence. It would include more specific materials and details tailored to their specific population:
  • Understanding the science, making permanent changes, relaxation and Autism
  • Understanding the science, making permanent changes, Relaxation and leisure /Recreation
  • Understanding the science, making permanent changes, relaxation and Mental Health
  • Understanding the science, making quality of life changes, relaxation and Alzheimer's
  • Understanding the science, making permanent changes, relaxation, prevention and wellness program

The above list could be done as an option for each type of setting, population etc. (Specifics of training for a particular profession could be taught by that profession.)

Once a person has successfully completed Level Three - Advanced training they would qualify to be a Trainer for MSE for AAMSE. (TMSE)
